And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good? Deuteronomy 10:12-13 (NIV)
People who respect the Lord will be safe, and they will make their children feel secure. Proverbs 14:26 (ERV)
  • Jesus SAVED me by serving me. (Mark 10:45)
  • Jesus SHOWED me how to serve others. (John 13:15)
  • Jesus SANCTIFIED me to serve others. (John 17:19)
As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. John 17:18-19 (NIV)
…Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant… Matthew 20:26b (NIV)
GREATNESS is determined by how I serve, not how I’m served.
To you, who were spiritually dead all the time that you drifted along on the stream of this world’s ideas of living, and obeyed its unseen ruler (who is still operating in those who do not respond to the truth of God), to you Christ has given life! Ephesians 2:2 (Phillips)
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ… 20 the powerful spirits that rule this world no longer have any authority over you. You do not need to serve them, because you do not belong to this world now. You do not need to obey their rules. Colossians 2:8, 20b (NIV/EASY)

S.O.S. = STRATEGY OF SERVICE

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35 (NIV)

FULLY RESPONDING TO GOD’S S.O.S. CALL REQUIRES…

1. THAT I HAVE THE HEART OF A SERVANT.

You may think that everything you do is right, but remember that the Lord judges your motives. Proverbs 21:2 (GNT)
“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthes 6:1-4 (NIV)
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”  1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)
He was like God in every way, but he did not think that his being equal with God was something to use for his own benefit.7 Instead, he gave up everything, even his place with God. He accepted the role of a servant, appearing in human form…Philippians 2:6-7 (ERV)
Love…is not self-seeking…  1 Corinthians 13:5 (NIV)
A servant heart does BECAUSE it loves, not WHAT it loves!

2. THAT I BE OPPORTUNISTIC.

When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Matthew 14:14 (NIV)
When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.  Mark 6:34 (NIV)
Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:10 (NIV)
None of you should look out just for your own good. Each of you should also look out for the good of others. Philippians 2:4 (NIRV)

3. THAT I DISCOVER MY SHAPE.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.  Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
NO ONE does everything well, but EVERYONE does something well!
  • SPIRITUAL GIFTS
  • HEART
  • ABILITIES
  • PERSONALITY
  • EXPERIENCES
Each of you has been blessed with one of God’s many wonderful gifts to be used in the service of others. So use your gift well. 1 Peter 4:10 (CEV)
